GCS now offers an interest-free rental deposit scheme to help islanders who can't afford the upfront costs of securing a home in the private rental market

We can help you if:
  • You have been a permanent resident of Guernsey for at least 12 months* and are eligible to live and work in the island.
  • You can’t afford to pay the deposit and/or a month’s rent in advance and you’re not able to get a conventional loan from a licenced lender.
  • But you do you have enough money to pay the monthly rent and to repay our loan to you, taking account of any ESS benefits you receive.
  • You are aged 18 or over (in some cases we may be able to help if you are 16 or 17)
* We may also be able to help you if you are a local resident returning to the Bailiwick

How the scheme works

  • Firstly, come in and talk to us at GCS. We will explain the scheme to you and help you to complete an application form. Our opening hours are at the foot of this page. We can also arrange an appointment outside opening hours - just call 01481 700360.
  • You will need to provide:
o Proof of ID (passport or driving licence)
o Proof of address – (utility bill or a letter to you from a government department)
o Details of your tenancy and rental agreement
o Two months of bank statements.
  • We will help you calculate how much you can afford to pay back per week or month.
  • You then sign your rental agreement with your landlord.
  • You sign a loan agreement with GCS.
  • We then pay the rent deposit and, if required, the rent in advance direct to your landlord, with an agreement that the landlord will return the money, less any lawful deductions, to GCS when you leave the property.
  • We then return to you all surplus funds once your loan is repaid.
Please bear in mind:

  • This is a loan and you are expected to repay it weekly or monthly as agreed with GCS.
  • Paying the monthly rent to your landlord is your responsibility. GCS is not responsible for paying your rent.
  • Landlords will be expected to be reasonable with you, and you will be expected to be a responsible tenant.
  • If you fail to comply with the terms of your rental agreement and to keep the property in good order, the landlord may not return your full deposit at the end of the tenancy.
  • We are here to help if your financial or rental circumstances change.
